Psoriasis is a very unsightly and embarrassing skin condition that can flare up and cause patches of dead skin to build up and form a silvery-white plaque. Steroid creams are usually prescribed. However, a psoriasis home treatment can often work very effectively. This article outlines some of the home treatments you could use to treat your psoriasis.

Home Treatment for Psoriasis

  • Apple cider vinegar

Apple cider vinegar contains antibacterial properties and can be used to treat nail psoriasis. Pour a little bit into a small dish and soak your nails in it. It’s also good at treating athlete’s foot and toenail fungus.

  • Olive oil

Olive oil is a good treatment for psoriasis of the scalp; apply with cotton wool to the affected area and then cover the head with a shower cap to keep it warm. You can leave it on for as long as you want, then wash it off with a mild shampoo. Coconut oil is another excellent psoriasis home treatment. Coconut oil can also fight fungal infections and is good for treating athlete’s foot and fungal nail infections.

  • Ultraviolet Rays

Ultraviolet rays are shown to help ease psoriasis; often, a lack of vitamin D can trigger psoriasis, so as sunlight is an excellent source of vitamin D, it will help to alleviate the itchy scaly patches. During the dark winter months, psoriasis may become worse due to a lack of sunlight. You could try sitting under an ultraviolet lamp or have a couple of sunbed treatments.

  • Skin Hydrated

Dry skin can result from dehydration, so make sure you drink plenty of water each day to keep your skin hydrated. This can make a big difference to dry patches of skin such as eczema and psoriasis. Use a gentle, unscented moisturiser and apply to the affected area, then cover with cling film or other wrap and leave for a while to allow the product to penetrate the skin.

  • Saltwater

Saltwater has been shown to effectively treat psoriasis, preferably sea salt. This is the main reason why water and sea salt solutions are carried out and offered at holistic, ayurvedic, and spa centres. In particular, many dermatologists recommend Bokek Dead Sea salt bath for psoriasis sufferers. Sea salt is believed to have cleansing properties that clean pores and help detoxify the body. Therapeutic bath salts could also be used daily and weekly as a home treatment for psoriasis.

  • Salt Scrub

Apply a salt scrub to your skin and massage it well. This will exfoliate and slough off dead skin. Rinse thoroughly in the shower, and then apply moisturising oils to the skin. Your skin will feel silky smooth afterwards.

  • Removing excess dead skin

Removing excess dead skin each day is a great psoriasis home treatment and can prevent an excessive build-up of dead skin. The scales associated with psoriasis are dead skin cells that build up over time—forming scales. This can feel very itchy and sore.

  • Salicylic Acid

Salicylic acid can be used to remove the scales. It’s a natural softening agent that’s available without a prescription. You could also use warm olive oil mixed with a moisturiser.

  • Do Exercise

Exercise as a home psoriasis treatment is effective since it improves circulation and helps vital nutrients reach the skin’s surface. This provides the oils needed to keep the skin moisturised. Tai Chi, cycling, and swimming are recommended exercises since they improve strength and overall blood circulation. They are beneficial for joint inflammation because they are non-impacting and are gentle to the joints. Tai Chi is the most effective of the three because it encompasses a range of motion and stretching.
